What’s next?

It has been quite a year. The Supreme Court ruled in our favor on DOMA and Prop 8, Governor Jerry Brown signed the historic School Success and Opportunity Act (AB 1266) into law, and immigration reform has been quite the roller coaster ride.

As an organization, we’ve gone through some changes as well. At the very beginning, in 2004, we were Asian Equality–a coalition of individuals and organizations committed to fighting for marriage equality. We convened API community leaders, secured endorsements from elected officials, and participated in field and media campaigns to mobilize the API community against Prop 8.

Since then, we’ve evolved. Over the last 9 years, we’ve become API Equality – Northern California, an organization working to make the world a safer and more equitable place for all LGBTQ API people through visibility, leadership development, and alliance building. There’s so much that we’re proud of from this year alone. Through our new Pink Elephant Project, we convened a cohort of inspiring API people of faith to share their stories. We became a partner of the Dragon Fruit Project to further our intergenerational community-building. We collected hundreds of postcards to advance fair and humane immigration reform. We graduated our fourth class of summer interns!

Now, once again, we have the opportunity to evolve and grow. Will you help shape the future of API Equality – Northern California? Take 10 minutes to tell us what you think!

We know that there is so much to do for, with, and within the LGBTQ API community. We know that ensuring our well-being and livelihood has never been a simple matter of passing bills, that it is often about more than “equality”. We want to bring intention to our work, and we want it to be informed by our huge and multifaceted community.
